Last Week Discussion #1
I have learned that an argument is not as simple as I once thought it was. I never took into consideration how much effort and thought should be put into an argument. For instance, one must look for validity, strength, and whether or not the argument violates fallacies and appeal to emotion. Fallacies and appeal to emotion can weaken one’s argument and ultimately make the writer or speaker seem less credible because of the manipulation he or she may use for the audience to side with his or her argument. After taking this class, I have been able to strengthen my writing because my arguments have been more specific and more difficult to critique. I now understand that in order to get my point across, every word needs to count. Last, but not least, I have learned the importance of teamwork. Completing three different assignments with people I have never met was nerve wrecking. However, by reading the book on group communication, I have learned how to function effectively in a group such as setting group norms and making each member feel like they have an important role in the group process.

Hello EsconeQueen!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post and i have to agree with you. I see arguements in an a whole new level after this class! lol! I'm also very surprised of how much effort we had to go through in order to examine the different types of arguments in order to make an argument a strong one. I enjoyed this class because it's great to learn how to communicate with groups as well and the book was very easy to read and understand with all the examples that the book gives. As much as i enjoyed this class, i'm so glad we're almost done with this semester! Your posts has always been one of few that i check when i don't understand a topic from our reading. You and a few others explains topics so well and it helped me through the struggles of this class. Thanks for that! :) Goodluck on your finals next week!
I also have never realized how complex arguments can be! There are so many different ways to analyze arguments and determine whether or not they are valid or strong. I agree that this class helps to strengthen people’s writing. In college, we write so many essays and a majority of them are arguments. The various concepts that we learn in this class definitely do transfer over to our essays for other classes and also to our everyday lives. This class has also definitely helped with making me realize the importance of teamwork as well. I’m glad you were able to gain so much from the group projects.
